Liana Loewus

Liana Loewus has worked at the intersection of education and public media for nearly two decades.

She began her career teaching children to read, both as an elementary special education teacher and a Lindamood-Bell-trained reading specialist. She then moved into education journalism, and from 2010 to 2021 worked at Education Week as a curriculum reporter and as an assistant managing editor leading a team reporting on literacy, teacher policy issues, and race and opportunity in schools.

While an editor at EdWeek, she spearheaded a series called Getting Reading Right, which explored the challenges teachers face in bringing cognitive science on reading to the classroom. The project, funded by a fellowship grant from the Education Writers Association, included groundbreaking survey data that helped establish just how widespread the use of balanced literacy curricula and methods were in K-12 classrooms nationally.

Prior to joining Reading Universe, she was the managing editor for education at U.S. News & World Report, where she oversaw a team of reporters and editors writing advice content on higher education and K-12 schools. She has also worked as a health care reporter and served as the editor for LD OnLine, a WETA sister site to Reading Universe.
