Writing is the act of putting thoughts into print. At its most basic level, students must learn the mechanics of encoding, which includes proper letter formation and the accurate matching of sounds to symbols in our alphabet. Writing as an expression of thought requires planning, creativity, an understanding of text structure, and other higher order thinking. Learning to become a skilled writer is not a linear process, and it will develop over time, even into adulthood. Reading and writing are interdependent skills, and practicing each strengthens the other.
