Phonological Awareness Continuum of Skills

Phonological awareness continuum

Phonological awareness is an auditory skill, and with beginning readers, instruction starts with a group of skills that enable children to recognize and manipulate parts of spoken words, including syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes. Phonological awareness activities include identifying, blending, segmenting, and manipulating syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes in words.

This graphic illustrates the sequence of phonological awareness skills we teach to beginning readers.
