Base element

Base element - a type of word part (morpheme) that carries meaning but can't stand alone (-vac-, -rupt-, -spect-) and is derived from a distant root word (vacare, rumpere, spectare). Base elements combine with prefixes and suffixes to form modern words (vacation, disrupted, inspecting). Teaching your students to identify base elements helps them read words with these elements and provides them with clues to word meanings.
