EPP Model Course Syllabus: Syllabus 1: Foundations of Evidence-Based Reading Instruction

A Model Course Syllabus for Educator Preparation Programs. Developed by Dr. Stephanie Stollar. This introductory course equips teacher candidates with the research behind how students learn to read and why some struggle. You will dive into the five essential components of literacy — phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension — and discover how they are integrated to support proficient reading skills. Based upon the Simple View of Reading, teacher candidates will learn and apply evidence-based practices to support all students in developing their literacy skills.
