Khadijah Williams: Good morning y'all.
Students: Good morning.
Narrator: It's syllable time during Ms. William's small group reading lesson, and she kicks it off with a mix and match game. This gives students the chance to practice reading each syllable on its own before blending them together to read the whole word.
Khadijah Williams: If we combine two syllables, right? I think we can make some words. Let me show you. So I'm going to take "ar" and "cade." Arcade. What's an arcade?
Student: Somewhere you could play games.
Student: Where you can eat candy.
Khadijah Williams: Of course. Candy and pizza and all the things. Very good. And I see another word. This word means big. What is the word?
Student: Jumbo.
Khadijah Williams: Jumbo. Awesome job.
Narrator: And they're so excited. They're finding words on their own.
Student: Forbid.
Khadijah Williams: Oh, forbid. Oh, now we're just on it. Go ahead. Forbid. What does forbid mean?
Student: We forgive something?
Khadijah Williams: It means you can't do or you shouldn't do it. When your mom tells you, I forbid you to go outside and play in the rain. Right?
