Sarah Hughes-Green: Today, my friends, we are going to be reading chapter 10 of our book, "Finding Someplace."
VO: While reading from a class novel, Ms. Hughes-Green pauses to explain words or concepts that are likely unfamiliar to our students. She keeps the explanation very brief so they can get back to reading.
Sarah Hughes-Green: "Love you. The signal was gone." So remember during a hurricane, sometimes cell phones can't get through, right? So she couldn't hear everything her mom was saying, but she heard a little bit and now the signal's gone again. So she's lost touch with her mom again. "Junior had called him flaky when he dropped out of high school, but Orlando said Dré had gotten his GED and a steady job." So GED stands for "graduate equivalency degree." And it's like if you don't finish high school, but later you decide you kind of wish you did, you can go back to school and get a GED. And it's like a high school diploma.
