This lesson uses subject and predicate cards (opens in new window) to help students make simple sentences. The subject, or the naming part, and the predicate, or action part, are joined together to form the sentence. It is important to start with short sentences in kindergarten and first grade.
You can also create your own subject and predicate cards. When creating card parts, start with four- to six-word sentences that are related to content or text used in class.
It is important to keep your subject and predicate cards consistent colors. This is a good support for all students, but benefits English Learners in particular by offering a visual cue to assist with the vocabulary. Another strategy for supporting English Learners is to use pictures of people or objects for the subject cards and pictures of actions for the predicate cards.
