Teaching Reading and Writing: 5 Model Syllabi for Higher Ed Faculty

Welcome, professors! We developed these syllabi to support you in your pre-service courses on reading and writing instruction. Our goal is to bolster your evidence-based literacy practices for undergraduate and graduate-level teacher candidates. 

• If this is your first time teaching a literacy education course, feel free to use these syllabi as they are. Copy and paste them into your own documents and share them with your students. 
• For professors with an established, research-informed curriculum already, we hope you'll explore these syllabi to find new timely resources, including outstanding, in-classroom videos featuring highly-skilled teachers from around the United States. 

All of these syllabi were prepared by Dr. Stephanie Stollar, a nationally-recognized literacy expert and the founder of The Reading Science Academy. Each syllabus is carefully structured and sequenced to serve as the foundation of a standard three-credit, 15-week, full-semester course, including these elements:

• Weekly objectives aligned to the International Dyslexia Association Knowledge and Practice Standards (opens in new window) (KPS) to ensure teacher candidates have both the knowledge and skills to teach students to read proficiently
• Readings and assignments with model teaching videos from Reading Universe, free for you to embed in your course materials
