Teaching Reading and Writing: Model Course Syllabi

We developed this resource for professors who teach pre-service courses on reading and writing instruction. Our goal is to support evidence-based literacy practices for undergraduate and graduate-level teacher candidates. We're offering model syllabi for a four-course series and also a syllabus for a single course series (Coming Soon!) that covers the most essential components of structured literacy. All of these syllabi were prepared by Dr. Stephanie Stollar, a nationally-recognized literacy expert and the found of The Reading Science Academy. 

Each syllabus is carefully structured and sequenced to serve as the foundation of a standard three-credit, full-semester course. Within these model syllabi, we have provided links to authoritative, up-to-date readings and videos that will significantly bolster the development of pre-service teachers. 

We invite you to copy and paste some or all of these syllabi and resources and to use them in your own courses. If this is your first time teaching a literacy education course, we think these models can be invaluable as a freamwork for building your own syllableus. For professors with an established, reearch-informed curriculum already, we hope to enhance your existing syllabi with timely resources, including outstanding in-classroom videos featuring highly-skilled teachers from around the United States.
