The Reading Universe Professional Learning Community (PLC) series provides guidance to reading coaches, principals, and team leaders on how to lead teacher professional development training sessions about reading instruction. All of the resources and materials you need to plan and implement your session are listed below and are available for FREE to all teachers! You may download, share, or stream the media with teachers in any setting. No special login is required.
Participants will observe these teaching strategies in action as they watch, analyze, and discuss model classroom instruction with third grade teacher Estella Escajeda of Loma Linda Elementary School in Anthony, New Mexico, who guides her students through a structured literacy phonics lesson on the difference between short ‘i’ and short ‘e’. This training also emphasizes the role explicit instruction plays in teaching ELs the pronunciation of sounds while offering culturally responsive ways to provide corrective feedback throughout the learning process. Participants will wrap-up the session with a clear review of opportunities to leverage language and learning in their literacy instruction with the students in their own classroom.
