Connecting Multisyllabic Words to Other Phonics Skills
Once your students have accuracy and automaticity with reading one-syllable words (often in first grade), you can integrate multisyllabic words into your other phonics instruction.
| Phonics Skill You Have Taught and Students Have Mastered | Syllable Type | Types of Multisyllabic Words to Introduce |
|---|---|---|
| One-syllable short vowels CVC ("tin," "red") | Closed syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "contact" and "dentist," that are closed-closed |
| One-syllable open syllable CV ("he," "so") | Open syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "jumbo" and "condo," that are closed-open |
| Consonant digraphs and blends ("step," "chat") | Closed syllables | Introduce VCCCV words, like "pilgrim" and "children," that are closed-closed |
| 'Y' as a vowel ("my," "fly") | Open syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "candy" and "plenty," that are closed-open |
| Magic 'e' ("make," "tile") | Magic 'e' syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "reptile" and "invite," that are closed-magic 'e' |
| R-controlled vowels ("farm," "worm") | R-controlled syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "target" and "confirm," that are closed-r-controlled or r-controlled-closed |
| Vowel teams and diphthongs ("play," "boat") | Vowel Team syllables | Introduce syllable division for words with vowel teams and diphthongs, such as "employ," "enjoy," and "window." Note: There are only a limited number of multisyllabic words that contain vowel teams. |
| VV (vowel-vowel) | Open syllables | VV words, like "diet" and "riot," that are open-closed |
| Consonant -le ("candle," "rumble") | Consonant -le | Introduce syllable division for consonant '-le' words, as in "stable" and "bubble" |
| Schwa ("about," "banana") | All syllable types | Schwa can be introduced as it comes up throughout your scope and sequence, in words such as "cotton" and "confirm" |
