Connecting Multisyllabic Words to Other Phonics Skills
Once your students have accuracy and automaticity with reading one-syllable words (often in first grade), you can integrate multisyllabic words into your other phonics instruction.
Phonics Skill You Have Taught and Students Have Mastered | Syllable Type | Types of Multisyllabic Words to Introduce |

One-syllable short vowels CVC ("tin," "red") | Closed syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "contact" and "dentist," that are closed-closed |
One-syllable open syllable CV ("he," "so") | Open syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "jumbo" and "condo," that are closed-open |
Consonant digraphs and blends ("step," "chat") | Closed syllables | Introduce VCCCV words, like "pilgrim" and "children," that are closed-closed |
'Y' as a vowel ("my," "fly") | Open syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "candy" and "plenty," that are closed-open |
Magic 'e' ("make," "tile") | Magic 'e' syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "reptile" and "invite," that are closed-magic 'e' |
R-controlled vowels ("farm," "worm") | R-controlled syllables | Introduce VCCV words, like "target" and "confirm," that are closed-r-controlled or r-controlled-closed |
Vowel teams and diphthongs ("play," "boat") | Vowel Team syllables | Introduce syllable division for words with vowel teams and diphthongs, such as "employ," "enjoy," and "window." Note: There are only a limited number of multisyllabic words that contain vowel teams. |
