Once your students have practiced the skills of onset-rime with your support, they should continue to practice independently to build accuracy and fluency. Cumulatively, each skill in the phonological sequence should become automatic to support skilled word recognition.
You can use the following practice activity — Onset-Rime Detective — after students have become accurate with the skill during instruction. You'll need to teach how to do this activity before you send children to centers for independent practice. You may decide to model it in whole group, model at your small group table, or have an assistant teacher demonstrate it in a small group. Once you teach this activity for onset-rime, children can easily adapt and accurately complete it for other phonological skills.
We have included a recording sheet for you. It's important for children to capture their answers so you can monitor if they are practicing accurately — and can provide feedback and intervene if they're not.
