Once your students have practiced the skills of phoneme identification with your support, they should continue to practice independently to build accuracy and fluency. Cumulatively, each skill in the phonological sequence must become automatic to support skilled word recognition (Scarborough, 2001).
You can use the following practice materials after students become accurate with phoneme identification during instruction. You'll need to teach how to do these activities before you send children to centers for independent practice. You may decide to model each one in whole group, model at your small group table, or have your assistant teacher demonstrate the activity in a small group.
Most of these activities can be tweaked and used to practice all phonological awareness skills. So once you teach it for one skill, children can easily adapt and accurately complete them for another skill. We have included recording sheets for you. It's important for children to capture their answers so that you can monitor if they are practicing accurately and can provide feedback and intervene if they're not.
The following activities provide practice with phoneme identification.
