In this section, we are going to walk you through the steps you'll need to take in order to teach phoneme segmenting and blending to your students:
You can work through these sections sequentially, or jump straight to what you need.
As with all literacy skills, to teach phoneme segmentation and blending you will use an evidence-based approach called structured literacy. A signature feature of structured literacy is explicit or direct instruction. This kind of instruction requires teachers to set a clear objective, present the new information explicitly, model the skill, offer guided support, and give students lots of opportunities to practice independently.
One way to deliver explicit instruction is through the model commonly known as "I Do, We Do, You Do.” The teacher begins by delivering the new information, then students work together with the teacher, and eventually students practice independently.
