                    Once your students have practiced the skills of phoneme segmentation and blending with your support, they should continue to practice independently to build accuracy and fluency

                    You can use the following practice materials after students have become accurate with phoneme segmenting and blending during instruction. You’ll need to teach how to do these activities before you send children to centers or assign them independent practice. You may decide to model each one in whole group, model at your small-group table, or have an assistant teacher help you demonstrate the activity in a small group. Most of these activities can be tweaked and used to practice all phonological awareness skills. So once you teach them for one skill, children can easily adapt and accurately complete them for another skill. 

                    We have included recording sheets for you. It’s important children capture their answers so you can monitor if they are practicing accurately – and provide feedback and intervention if they’re not.

                    Phoneme Detective

                    In this activity, children will play a detective game with a partner to practice segmenting and blending phonemes.

                    Count the Phonemes

                    In this two-part activity, students will practice counting phonemes using picture cards with Elkonin boxes.
