3.2 Explicitly Teach Consonant '-le' Syllables
Consonant '-le' Skill Explainer
Now it's time to teach!
Watch second grade teacher Liz Quezada explicitly teach the consonant ‘-le’ syllable to a small group of students through flash cards and dictation.

Teacher Tip
For Modeling Purposes Only
It is important to know that students should not be writing the numbers when they practice reading consonant '-le' words. We model this here to help you, the teacher, understand the process. You can model for students by pointing to each letter (starting with the 'e') and saying, "Count back three for consonant '-le' and divide."

Teacher Tip
A Note about Syllable Division
Dividing and labeling words is a scaffold, not the skill. It should be used in the initial stages of introducing a new syllable type. For some students, they will not need to follow the steps for long. Once they are able to decode the multisyllabic word without it, you can fade it out. Others may rely on the process longer. Also, keep in mind that for some students, marking and labeling may create too much cognitive load; so be ready to adjust the process to support their needs.
