This is how we warm up the r-controlled flashcards. We like to call the r-controlled syllable bossy 'r' because it warps the vowel sound. 'ar', arm, /ar/. 'or', fork, /or/. 'er', fern, /er/. 'ir', bird, /er/. /ur/, surf, /er/. You might have noticed the last three r-controlled vowels all say /er/. We call these the /er/ triplets. Unfortunately, there's not a rule for when to use which one, so we have to expose our kids to these words. They need to read them a lot. They're really easy to read, but for spelling, we're going to have to dictate a lot of these /er/ triplet words and tell our students which /er/ triplet it is.

Reading Universe is made possible by generous support from Jim & Donna Barksdale; the Hastings/Quillin Fund, an advised fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (opens in new window); the AFT (opens in new window); the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation (opens in new window); and three anonymous donors.
