2. When to Teach Syllable Awareness

Syllable awareness is a foundational word recognition skill that comes first within the phonological continuum of skills. 

Grade Level

We typically teach syllable awareness in kindergarten and solidify it in first grade. Some children may be ready for syllable awareness as early as pre-K. Some older students may need this instruction in the form of intervention.

Prerequisite Skills for Syllable Awareness

• Children should understand the concept of a word.
• They should understand that words are made up of speech sounds.
