Now it's time 'ai' and 'ay'!

'ai' and a picture of a train.

This is a picture of a train. I hear /t/, /r/, /ā/, /n/. In this word, the /ā/ sound is spelled 'ai'. 'ai' is a vowel team. The letters 'a' and 'i' team up and make the long 'a' sound. When you see 'ai' together in a word, you say /ā/. Something that is important to know about the vowel team 'ai' is that it will never be at the end of a word. 'ai' comes at the beginning or in the middle of a word.

'ay' and a picture of hay bales.

This is a picture of hay. I hear /h/, /ā/. In this word, the /ā/ sound is spelled 'ay'. 'ay' is a vowel team. The letters 'a' and 'y' team up and make the long 'a' sound. When you see 'ay' together in a word, you say /ā/. Something that is important to know about the vowel team 'ay' is that it will never be at the beginning or in the middle of a single syllable word. 'ay' comes at the end of a word.

Teacher Tip

Providing Guidance About Spelling Patterns
Many vowel teams make the same vowel sounds as other letter patterns that students have learned. For example, 'ai' makes the long 'a' sound, and students should already know that 'a'-consonant-'e' and 'a' in an open syllable also make the long 'a' sound. Therefore, when doing dictation, you may have to specify that when they hear the long 'a' sound in dictation today, they are going to write 'ai'. Finish your dictation with phrases and sentences with words containing the new vowel team or diphthong.
